For long-term care and nursing, the Netherlands has a compulsory insurance scheme to which everyone contributes, on the basis of their income. Forty-five per cent of all spending on care goes to long-term care. There are various sorts of insurance covering hospital care, GP consultations and paramedical care, which together account for 52% of all expenditure on care.
Long-term care for the elderly, the chronically ill, the disabled and people with psychiatric disorders has changed enormously. There is increasing recognition that these groups should be able to take part in society. Care for groups such as the elderly and disabled used to be available only in institutions. It can now be offered in the home.
